Andrew Johnston closed with a one-over 71 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 27th place at the Open Championship.
Johnston was only able to muster nine birdies at Royal Birkdale this week, which was tied for 59th in the field. He has now finished inside the top-30 in four of his last six events. His eighth-place finish during last year's Open Championship remains his best finish in a major.

Andrew Johnston shot a three-over 75 on Sunday at Erin Hills to finish in a tie for 42nd place in the U.S. Open.
Johnston unfortunately played holes 5-9 on Sunday in five-over-par as he fell down the leaderboard late. He was sitting in good position after a 69 on Thursday, but couldn't get anything going after that as he was over-par in the final three rounds. Johnston didn't have his best ball-striking week as he was outside the top-40 in driving accuracy and greens in regulation. He was also a mediocre 48th in SG: Tee-to-green. Johnston now sits 112th in the OWGR.
Andrew Johnston qualified for the U.S. Open via local qualifying on Monday, Will Gray of GolfChannel.com reports.
Johnston, who participated in the England section qualifying, will be a U.S. Open participant for the second consecutive year. He hasn't had much success on American soil throughout a limited sample size, but one of the fan-favorites will have the opportunity to make some noise at Erin Hills in a couple weeks.
