Devin Mesoraco (C / Cin)

Devin Mesoraco (C, Cin)

Devin Mesoraco is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.

Impact

Mesoraco is feeling healthy again after a back issue sidelined him for about two weeks, but the Reds will continue to act conservatively with his workload this season due to his extensive injury history. He'll sit Sunday for the third time in five days, affording Tucker Barnhart a start behind the plate.

Older News

Devin Mesoraco will take a seat for Friday's game against the Marlins.

Impact

Mesoraco was just reinstated from the DL (back) on Wednesday, and made his first start since early July during Thursday's game with the Diamondbacks. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, but more importantly, felt fine following the contest. The catcher will get the day off after returning to the lineup, while Tucker Barnhart draws the start in his stead.

Devin Mesoraco (lat) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.

Impact

This turned out to be a much shorter DL stint than we've come to expect from the embattled backstop, as it lasted just two weeks. Despite the activation, Mesoraco will not be in the lineup Wednesday night, although the expectation is that he'll assume regular catching duties soon. Tucker Barnhart will likely assume catching duties when the Reds opt to rest Mesoraco.

Devin Mesoraco (lat) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville on Monday, Zach Buchanan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact

Mesoraco will be behind the plate Monday for the first game of what's expected to be a short rehab assignment for the backstop, who has been on the 10-day disabled list since July 3 due to a strained lat. The injury was never considered as serious as the shoulder issue that required surgery last season, but because of the 29-year-old's checkered health history, the Reds have been cautious with easing him back into action. Once he's activated, Mesoraco will likely reclaim the larger side of a timeshare at catcher with Tucker Barnhart.

Devin Mesoraco's shoulder injury is unrelated to his previous torn labrum that ultimately required surgery, according to manager Bryan Price, as told to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

Impact

That's the good news. The bad news is that Mesoraco hurt his shoulder catching the ball, and that anti-inflammatory medicine did not lessen the soreness in his shoulder. While the Reds don't believe this is a long-term injury, how he did it and that he could not get immediate relief don't bode well.

Devin Mesoraco was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder Wednesday.

Impact

Although the afflicted shoulder is on his non-throwing arm, it's noteworthy that this is the same side that was surgically repaired in the past. The embattled catcher will head back to the disabled list for at least 10 days, although it's unclear whether he'll need more time than that or not. Given his injury history, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Reds take things very slowly with Mesoraco. To fill his roster spot, right-hander Ariel Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A.

Devin Mesoraco is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Rockies, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Impact

Mesoraco will take a seat for the second straight game, and for the fifth time over the last nine contests. His .234/.333/.459 triple slash is respectable enough for a backstop, but his sporadic playing time from week to week makes him a difficult fantasy piece.

Devin Mesoraco is out of the lineup Monday against the Rockies, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Impact

Mesoraco is still viewed as the Reds' primary starter at catcher, but his erratic at-bats from week-to-week can often make him difficult to depend on in the fantasy realm. He'll find himself on the bench for the fourth time in six games as manager Bryan Price goes with Tucker Barnhart behind the dish in the series opener.

Devin Mesoraco is out of Saturday's lineup against the Cubs, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Impact

He takes a seat for the second game in a row, with Tucker Barnhart starting behind the dish and hitting eighth. Mesoraco does not play as much as a typical starting catcher, but he produces enough (.828 OPS) when he does play that he should still be rostered in deeper one-catcher formats and all two-catcher leagues.

Devin Mesoraco is not in Friday's lineup, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.

Impact

Mesoraco will get another day off following an 0-for-3 day with two strikeouts during Thursday's series finale against Milwaukee. In his place, Tucker Barnhart will catch Scott Feldman.

Impact
